David Militello
Autistic Child Performer
It's not unusual to hear a parent describe their own child as a wonderful or sensational singer;
but it is quite uncommon for a three year old to babble when speaking, yet be able to sing
beautifully and in perfect pitch. It is also uncharacteristic for a child with autism who
struggles with social skills to want to intentionally sing before thousands. Yet, this is the
exact character of nine year old David Militello.
At two and a half years of age, David would do the following:
 | | Hum constantly;
|
 | | Play alone as if no one else was there;
|
 | | Babble instead of speak; and
|
 | | Walk around with musical toys press up against his ear. |
| | |
Then What Happened?
Because of David's extraordinary memory and his love for music, he was able to memorize
not only the words to hundreds of songs, but he also learned to play the songs by ear. On
several occasions, David sang back up and accompanied his aunt, Johnnie Proby, an
inspirational vocalist. He quickly developed a love for being in front of an audience and
soon he began to request to sing alone.
Where's Little David Now?
David has been featured on the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric, The CW's Focus
Atlanta, NBC's 11 Alive Evening News with Brenda Wood, and CBS' Better Mornings
television show.
A recent accomplishment, which David is most proud of, is making the top 60 contestants
of the America's Got Talent television show.
A few of his recent performances include being a featured soloist at his home church, Word
of Faith, where Bishop Dale C. Bronner is the Shepherd, singing at the Georgia State
Capitol for the Coretta Scott King Birthday Celebration, singing at Zoo Atlanta for the
Atlanta Earth Day Celebration, singing the National Anthem at the 2008 Georgia Walk for
Autism, singing the National Anthem and the African American National Anthem at the
Martin Luther King, Jr. March and Rally, and singing the National Anthem at two Atlanta
Hawks games.
After seeing several stage plays, David's ultimate goal is to sing on Broadway.
